Learning to live
Mr Tan Khay Teck
In november 2007, Mt tan khay teck, a dynamic and vibrant 71 year-old, was suddenly told that he had lung cancer and had only months to live.
His wife, Mrs Tan, said that he was absolutely fine until that point in time."All that changed in a heartbeat. i couldn't sleep from the shock of the news."
As the primary caregiver, Mrs Tan Struggled financially in thier small, rented room in a walk-up apartment. both had to stop working. She had to take care of him.
"He would wake up freqently to use the bathroom. Afiad that he might fall. I would wake up to help. I also hd to clean,cook and do everything. Everyday, every hour, i was exhausted," she recounted.
Then, Mr Tan's doctor referred him to Dover Park Hospice(DPH). Immediately, changes were apparent. Mrs Tan was less pressured and Mr Tan's emotional state improved.
"I really like being at the hospice. The nurses and doctors are excellent. And i am able to participate in different activities," said Mr Tan. In December 2007, he went on an outing to Orchard Road to enjoy the Christmas lights. It was one of those outings regularly organised by volunteers.
Mrs Tan said,"To us,what is important is his comfort and care. I dont want him to worry.I want him to enjoy each day. I could not have coped on my own at home. Having a facility like DPH has been our lifeline."
The health professional and volunteers at DPH give holistic care to the terminally-ill by providing medical, psychological and spiritual support. Services are also offered the patient's family.
Since 1995, DPH has cared For more than 6,000 patients. About 85% of them are heavily subsidised, and pay only nominal fees. Each year, DPH requires about $4 million to remain operational. The government funds about a third of this. The shortfall is met by fund-raising and public donations.
